Birds and Whales: Pelagic Natural History Trips from Newburyport

Joppa Flats Education Center and Newburyport Whale Watch have developed a series of natural history excursions aboard the Prince of Whales. There will be 5 "BIrding and Whale" trips, focusing on the fabulous seabirds and marine mammals of our offshore waters, and a day-long "Dedicated Offshore Birding Trip" on September 9. Download the program brochure.

Preregistration is required! To register for these marine birding trips, please call Newburyport Whale Watch at 1-800-848-1111.

Birding and Whale Trips

During these 5 hour trips, we will look for concentrations of birds such as storm-petrels, shearwaters, gannets, jaegers, and terns. Bill Gette or David Larson from the Joppa Flats Education Center will be aboard to help spot and narrate bird sightings. The marine mammal naturalists on the Prince of Whales will also provide commentary.

Each program will run from 10 a.m. to at least 3:00 p.m and cost $45 for adults, $35 for childred, and $40 for seniors.

Dedicated Offshore Birding Trip -- September 9, 2007

This is a full-day excursion in search of seabirds with Bill Gette and Steve Mirick. We will head to scouted locations and known hotspots, which could include Jeffrey's Ledge, Stellwagen Bank, or other spots. Aside from the usual summer-resident birds such as Wilson's Storm-Petrel, Greater and Sooty shearwaters, and Northern Gannets, we will hope for rarities such as Long-tailed Jaeger, Sabine's Gull, Leach's Storm-Petrel, and skuas. We will lay down chum lines and chase birds.

Date: Sunday, September 9, 2007
Program time: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Cost: $95
