School Programs

Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary has a long-standing contract with the Martha's Vineyard School System to provide environmental education programs in island schools.

Each grade level participates in a different program, ranging from seasons walks to habitat explorations. All nine third grade classrooms participate in a three-part freshwater pond study. The Felix Neck naturalist visits the classroom to introduce the unit, and the students then take field trips to collect organisms at Elizabeth's Pond and the pond at Cranberry Acres.

As a part of their field trips, students identify, count and record the number of each species found. Students then create graphs to represent their findings. Below are links to PDF files for fall 2002. By putting them on our website, we hope that students from different schools can compare and contrast their findings to those of other classes. They can also begin to pose and answer questions about the reasons fro the differences and similarities.
