Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary at La Salette
Nestled between downtown Attleboro and Mass Audubon's Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary, and just behind the National Shrine of our Lady of La Salette, lies Mass Audubon’s Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary at La Salette. This extraordinary 117-acre property, owned by La Salette Shrine, was permanently protected with the help of the City of Attleboro, Attleboro Land Trust, National Shrine of our Lady of La Salette, and Mass Audubon.
Nesting forest birds such as scarlet tanagers, ovenbirds, and veeries can be heard calling. Chorusing bullfrogs and green frogs inhabit Brother's Pond, keeping company with painted and snapping turtles. Wetlands, rich with life, crisscross this sanctuary. A red maple swamp bordered by fragrant spicebush, several vernal pools, and many historical remnants of life at the former "castle" are some of the highlights to be discovered here.
Visitors can explore the sanctuary on one of the many trails, including a universally accessible trail traversing a vernal pool, a longer loop winding through a red maple swamp, and a woodland trail to the Retreat Center at La Salette.
