This weekend is your chance to explore Rhode Island’s top winter birding locations. During our program, we will explore both the famous and lesser-known birding locations, all of which can be very productive. Large concentrations of waterfowl and many species of passerines gather on and around the ponds, rivers, and bays that remain ice-free at this time of year. On Saturday, we will bird sites in the Newport area including the James Turner Reservoir, Watchamocket Cove, Colt State Park, Tiverton’s fields and marshes, Sisson Pond, and Sachuest Point. On Sunday, we will visit several sites in the Jamestown area, including Beavertail State Park, before moving on to Point Judith, Galilee, Matunuck, Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, and Ninigret State Park. During our Rhode Island adventure, we expect to see approximately 100 species including over 20 species of ducks (e.g., harlequin, Barrow’s goldeneye, long-tailed duck).
