Fee: $1,249 m / $1,399 nm
Dates: February 27, 2010-March 2, 2010

Escape the cold Northeast and join us on a photography adventure to some of Mid-Florida’s wildlife hotspots this winter! Limited to 6 registrants, the small size of this group will enable individual coaching on your photography throughout the trip and increase the chance of encountering wildlife up close.

We will visit National Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, known for a 2.25 mile raised boardwalk to observe and photograph a wide variety of nesting birds, such as yellow-crowned night herons, barred owls and wood storks. This site is also known for a variety of reptiles, mammals, insects and native plants, including wild orchids. From land to water, experience Myakka State Park from all angles as we photograph wading birds, such as sandhill cranes and ibis, and sunning and swimming alligators from the park’s boat and walkways. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge presents opportunities to photograph birds rarely seen in the Northeast such as ibis, reddish egrets, roseate spoonbills, little blue and tri-colored herons as they feed during low tide. As evening approaches, we will station our cameras to capture the birds of the Venice Area Audubon Rookery, such as black crowned night herons, snowy egrets and anhingas as they return to feed their young. Among the highlights of the trip will be a chartered pontoon boat tour of nesting islands of the Inter-Coastal waterway where we will have opportunities to photograph the ospreys and huge numbers of wood storks, great egrets, herons and pelicans as they care for their chicks. Other animal close encounters may include various butterflies and endangered scrub jays and gopher tortoises near the Venice beaches.
