Bhutan is one of our planet's great hot spots of biodiversity and one of the more pristine landscapes to be found anywhere. Lying in the heart of the eastern Himalayas and spanning almost 24,000 feet of altitude, most of the country remains cloaked in primeval forest. Although it is a temperate-zone country with an area about the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined, Bhutan contains almost 800 bird species (with a high number of virtual endemics) and 2,000 species of flowering plants, including 50 rhododendrons. We will enjoy all the delights of Bhutan’s natural world, as well as the cultural highlights and festivals in this delightful country.

Mongolia has always epitomized the remote, the exotic, and the mysterious. A vast wilderness that relatively few westerners have explored even today, Mongolia contains limitless vistas of mountains, steppes and deserts, all which provide habitat for cranes and lammergeiers, jerboas and ibex, and countless other strange and wonderful animals and plants that inhabit this arid heart of Central Asia. Asked to imagine the Mongolian landscape, most people probably think of the Gobi, the great desert that occupies the southern third of the country. But to think of Mongolia as a desert country is to ignore vast mountain ranges with numerous peaks ascending above 10,000 feet; immense conifer forests, oceanic expanses of lush grassland; and some of the world's most pristine rivers and lakes.
This new itinerary brings together the best the country has to offer in terms of birding and general natural history, unforgettable landscapes, and an introduction to one of the world’s most beguiling cultures. We will visit taiga forests, pristine Lake Hovsgol (Baikal’s clean and clear little sister), several variations of the great Mongolian steppe, and of course the Gobi. We will hope to find Argali Sheep, Siberian Ibex, Mongolian and Goitered Gazelles, and the Tahki, the last truly wild horse at large on the planet. We will also experience some excellent birding including rare, beautiful or fascinating species such as White-crowned and Demoiselle Cranes, Amur and Saker Falcons, Mongolian Ground Jay, Wallcreeper, Pere’s David’s Snow Finch and many migrant song- and waterbirds.
