Tours to Africa
Uganda: Birds and wildlife safari Adult Trip
Program Location: Africa Leaders: Chris Leahy, Bertrand Chair of Natural History
Fee: $7,800 m / $7,800 nm
Dates: February 9, 2010-February 26, 2010
Uganda is a country of startling contrasts. No other African country can match its astonishing variety of habitats including savanna, vast wetlands, arid semi-deserts, montane and lowland rainforests, volcanoes and an afro-alpine zone. Uganda’s bird life is remarkable, with birds found from both East and West Africa. A highlight is the chance to see the Shoebill — among Africa’s great rarities. Uganda boasts a national bird list of over 1008 species! This tour will explore Uganda’s fantastic national parks, including the Queen Elizabeth National Park, with large numbers of wild animals in a glorious setting of lakes, rivers and savannahs; and Murchison Falls National Park, where the riverbanks are lined with wildlife. We can expect to see elephants, lions, hippos, buffaloes, Uganda Kob and, of course, a great variety of birds. We will also spend time looking for the wild Mountain Gorilla’s and tracking other primates in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Botswana: Birding and Big Game
Adult Trip
Program Location: Africa Leaders: Wayne Petersen, Director, Important Bird Areas program
Fee:
$6,495 m / $6,495 nm
Dates: March 21, 2010-April 2, 2010
Experience the euphoria of a birding and big game safari to Botswana. The Okavango Delta is a wetland wilderness of looping channels, islands forested with palms and wide grassy floodplains. Home to a magnificent array of mammals (elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, among many more) with particularly extraordinary birding in late March (Pel’s Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane and more), this trip is incomparable. In contrast to the wetlands, we will also visit the famed Kalahari Desert – one of the most remote and unspoiled areas in all of Africa. After sunset, the Kalahari is alive with the sounds of roaring lions, White-faced Scops-Owls and the bark of geckos. Birding specialties we may see include Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Grey-backed Sparrowlark, Kalahari Scrub-robin, and African Wren-Warbler maybe found. Accommodations are luxurious, food is outstanding, and the guides world class.

Kenya Birding and Big Game
Adult Trip
Program Location: Africa Leaders: Chris Leahy, Bertrand Chair of Natural History
Fee:
TBD
Dates: October 30, 2010-November 13, 2010
This itinerary captures the essence of the classic East African safari, encompassing the cool green Aberdare highlands and Mt. Kenya, the spare beauty of the arid Samburu country, the incomparable vastness of the Serengeti grasslands and (in a 6 day extension) the majestic crater highlands of Tanzania.
These are the places that rise in your imagination when you think of Africa and its wildlife. The birding will be memorable, while the variety of habitats give us the opportunity to observe all of the “essential” African mammals: Lion, African Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, Giraffes, Zebras, Hippopotamus, Spotted Hyena, a stunning variety of antelopes - from the graceful little Thompson’s Gazelle to the imposing Eland – and, (with a little luck) Leopard. We have timed our visit to coincide with the great migrations of the Widebeest and other plains herbivores and the predators and scavengers that follow their legions, which lends extra drama to our daily explorations and discoveries.
