Photographing Birds and Other Wildlife:Gulf Coast of Florida

Sponsored by Museum of American Bird Art and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Fri, Jan 04, 2013 - Tue, Jan 08, 2013

Location: Museum of American Bird Art, Canton
Instructor: Shawn Carey - Photographer
Audience: Adult
Members: Adult $1450.00
Nonmembers: Adult free

Join Wildlife Photographer Shawn Carey of Migration Productions for an exciting photography tour of the Gulf Coast of Florida. Shawn has been photographing birds and other wildlife in Florida for the past 20 years and knows how to find many of the area's best photographic opportunities. Myakka River State Park, Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Corkscrew Swamp, and the Venice Rookery are among the places we will visit. We hope to see and photograph almost all of the long-legged wading birds such as great egret, great blue heron, little blue heron, tri-colored heron, reddish egret, snowy egret, limpkin, white and glossy ibis, as well as sandhill crane. Other species we will search for include bald eagle, red-shouldered hawk, brown pelican, white pelican, wood stork, black vulture, spoonbill, anhinga, skimmer, and the infamous American alligator.

This tour is limited to just 6 participants, which provides a fantastic student-instructor ratio. Students need to furnish their own digital SLR camera and lenses with a minimum focal length of 400 mm and tripod with Arca Swiss style plates for all camera bodies and lenses. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment. Shawn will provide instruction on proper practices for photographing birds and other wildlife, exposure, composing a good photo, how to photograph with a group, wildlife photography edict, plus some digital darkroom discussion between morning and afternoon photo sessions. While the days will be long with early starts in the morning and shooting into the evening, the rewards will be great with wildlife sightings and incredible photographic opportunities.

This trip arrives and departs from Fort Myers, Florida and we will be staying at the Veranda Inn for all 4 nights. All lodging and ground transportation while in Florida is provided. Meals are not included in the cost of the trip, except for dinner on the first evening. Cost is $1450 per person, double occupancy. A single supplement rate is available.

This trip is co-sponsored by Mass Audubon's Visual Arts Center and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Registration is through the Visual Arts Center.

Registration is required.
