Costa Rica Birding Trail tour

March 2011: Mass Audubon leader and naturalist, Sue MacCallum, returned from a fabulous trip to Costa Rica with a group of 8 enthusiastic birders.

The group traveled in the northern section of the country with a dash down the Pacific slope to Jaco. Many habitats were covered: mangroves and river edges along the Tarcoles River, forest trails at Braullio Carillo and Carara National Parks, Arenal Volcano and a peek at Nicaraqua along the border.

In total they saw 247 bird species (see the complete list) – with group favorites, including:

Top Ten Bird Species

Great Green Macaw

American Pygmy Kingfisher

Red-capped Manakin

Red-legged Honeycreeper

Yellow-thighed Finch

Bare-throated TigerHeron

Green Ibis

Black-crested Coquette

Turquoise-browed Motmot

Violet Sabrewing
