Mass Audubon offers a variety of exciting volunteer and internship opportunities for people of all interests, ages, and experience levels. Volunteers and interns greatly assist Mass Audubon in delivering its mission of conservation, education, and advocacy, and provide an important link to the community. Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary Duck Derby Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA Join in the fun! The Duck Derby is our largest fundraiser, held in August at the Sanctuary. Duck Derby volunteers are instrumental in the event’s success and provide a myriad of support, from selling ducks pre-Derby, gathering items for the silent auction, staffing the Derby Festival, distributing event information, assisting with the actual race and more! These volunteers are busiest from May to August. Outreach Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA The Outreach volunteer will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to represent the Sanctuary at local events and to assist in educational program development and execution. We are looking for motivated, self-starters with the confidence to speak and present to the public and who also exhibit a thirst for knowledge and sharing that knowledge with others. Examples of Outreach volunteer duties include staffing a table at an outreach event, assisting a Teacher Naturalist in delivering a program to groups of all ages on or off of the Sanctuary and researching/developing program ideas for special events. Qualifications: Individuals should be able to travel to local destinations and should be comfortable on their feet. Experience teaching environmental science(s) is helpful but not necessary. Publicity Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA The Publicity volunteer will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to promote Sanctuary events throughout the year, including the Allens Pond Duck Derby fundraiser which occurs in mid-August. We are looking for creative individuals with an interest in communicating about the Sanctuary and reaching a broad audience through varied media such as newspaper, TV, radio and internet. The Publicity volunteer will assist in promoting Sanctuary events by posting them to online calendars, emailing to media lists and distributing to local businesses and non-profits in person. Qualifications: Individuals should have good writing and communication skills. Experience writing press releases is helpful but not necessary. Shrubland Restoration Volunteer Location: Westport/Dartmouth, MA Shrubland Restoration Volunteers are needed at Allens Pond to help restore native plant species on sanctuary grounds. The main goal of this ongoing project is to eradicate invasive plant species, namely Multiflora Rose and Asiatic Bittersweet. The lands that have been invaded by these species are important winter habitat for bird species such as the Brown Thrasher and the Eastern Towhee. Northern Harriers also use this habitat. Upon the removal of invasive species, Allens Pond also needs assistance with planting native species. The presence of native flora will facilitate the use of this habitat by native bird and other animal species as well. Work may be, at times, physically demanding, but rewarding and instrumental in preserving the ecological integrity of areas in and around the sanctuary. Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary Sanctuary Volunteers Location: Worcester, MA Every Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, and the 1st Saturday of every month 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon, help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Come once or every week and become part of our growing group of sanctuary volunteers. Together with Sanctuary Director Deb Cary and other Mass Audubon staff, put up signs and markers, look for wildlife tracks, pick up branches, and fill the bird feeders. Projects are primarily outside. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without superivision required. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated. Thursday & Saturday Property Crew Location: Easthampton, MA Connecticut River Valley Sanctuaries need Property Crew Volunteers to maintain native landscaping, post boundaries, maintain trails, repair buildings and equipment, ensure safety and comfort of visitors and program participants, build bird houses, prepare the sanctuaries for special events and more. This team meets every Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon at the Arcadia Visitor Center and some Saturdays also from 9 a.m. to noon. Some activities are indoors in our workshop and occur even on rainy days. Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary Crops Field Volunteers Location: Lincoln, MA Learn sustainable agriculture techniques as you assist our staff with seedlings in the green house, field seeding, transplanting, maintaining and harvesting vegetables. A wide array of crops and annual flowers are grown. Produce is sold at our on-location veggie stand, through our Community Supported Agriculture program, to restaurants and at downtown farmers’ markets. This is local farming at its best. Flexible scheduling is available. Small groups of volunteers (five to eight) are welcome as well as individuals. No prior experience is needed. Qualifications: Must be at least 15 years old. Farm Ambassadors Location: Lincoln, MA Are you interested in natural history and willing to share that information with our visitors? We are looking for volunteers for our Farm Ambassador program. Farm Stand Specialist Location: Lincoln, MA This volunteer position will be stationed at our refurbished farm stand. You will be responsible for sharing with the public information on the items we grow and sell. Topics will include sustainable farming practices, the seasonality of our produce, providing taste tests for the public, and information on our value added products. We will provide training. Gardening Volunteer Location: Lincoln, MA Drumlin Farm is looking for volunteers to help with gardening tasks. We have a variety of plantings from a butterfly garden and native plant garden to vegetable beds. If you enjoy outdoor tasks this might be the position for you. Endicott Invasive Plant Removal Location: Great Marsh with trainings in Ipswich and Amesbury, MA Do you want to help Mass Audubon protect the biodiversity of the expansive Great Marsh region of Massachusetts? We are seeking volunteers to adopt-a-site ranging from Salisbury to Gloucester to help with pepper weed removal. Volunteers help control the spread of this invasive plant by manually pulling out plants and disposing of them properly.
Please wear water-proof boots or old sneakers you don’t mind getting damp. Once training is completed, volunteers can set their own schedules. Qualifications: This volunteer opportunity is ideal for individuals, families (with children age 6 and older), and small groups who can commit to spending a few hours several times a month, through the summer, removing weeds at their adopted site. Training is provided.

YOU can help Felix Neck and the wildlife in our island backyard. Volunteers are needed to monitor salamanders, identify and record dragonflies and damselflies, survey breeding birds, count spawning horseshoe crabs, and more! Training is provided.
Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history. Creative and flexible. Responsible and prompt. Ability to work without supervision required.
Visitor Services Assistant
Be the face of Felix Neck. Our Visitor Center needs volunteers to meet and greet visitors, answer phones, collect admissions, handle gift shop sales, register visitors for programs and answer questions about wildlife and the Sanctuary.
Qualifications: Volunteers must have a pleasant and professional manner and the ability to make visitors and callers feel welcome. Experience with or willingness to learn how to use a cash register and credit card machine. Training is provided. Three or four hour shifts available weekly or bi-weekly. Flexible schedules.
Education Program Assistant
Conduct environmental education programs at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Lead groups of visitors in hands-on discovery of the various habitats at Felix Neck. During the summer season education program volunteers lead Seashore Discovery programs for groups of visitors ranging in size from five to fifty-five people. Training is provided.
Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history and environmental education. Creative and flexible. High school diploma and some teaching experience. Basic natural history science background and local natural history needed. Responsible and prompt. Minimum of 18 years of age. Able to commit to volunteering at least one day a week during the summer season.
Property/Ecological Management
If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Felix Neck by participating in a wide variety of property and maintenance projects, such as invasive species removal, trail maintenance, buildings and grounds work, light carpentry, and painting. Help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required.
Gardening
Share your skills or learn new ones in our beautiful butterfly garden. Work on your own or have fun with others on scheduled volunteer days. Ability to work without supervision required.
Group Projects
Do you have a group that needs a community service project? If you do, then Felix Neck is the place for you on Martha’s Vineyard. We are looking for groups of between 10 and 25 people to work on various projects on the Sanctuary that center around trail work and ecological management. Please call to schedule your group.
Special Events
Our Fall Festival, the day after Thanksgiving, attracts hundreds of people. Join us in the festivities by taking admissions, assisting in the craft tent, or serving food.
Special Projects
If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Felix Neck, we invite you to meet with us and let us know of your ideas and special skills. Previous projects have included mural painting, butterfly garden design, wood duck box construction, screen house construction, and curriculum development. Your creative energies are welcome.

Audubon Nature Festival Location: Topsfield, MA Sunday, June 3, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Our annual Audubon Nature Festival will be held on Sunday, June 3. We are seeking volunteers to participate in committees to help with fundraising, publicity, programming, and food. We will also need people to donate baked goods for our bake sale, and, of course, to help on the day of the event with admissions, parking cars, food sales, assisting with children’s activities, and much more. Trail Restoration Projects Location: Topsfield, MA Thanks to grants from REI and the H.E. Thompson Foundation, we will be able to restore two trails this spring and summer. The Rockery Trail, one of our most popular trails, is wet and prone to continuing erosion due to a layer of clay just beneath the surface. To remedy this, we will place crushed stone on the trail and use hemlock ACQ pressure-treated ties to cut in steps along the steepest part.
The other trail we will be working on is the Innermost Trail boardwalk, which was damaged in the Mother’s Day storm of 2006, when four feet of water topped the boardwalk. The warped boards will be replaced and parts of the structure rebuilt.

Joppa Flats Education Center Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Location: Newburyport, MA Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) Volunteers are adults who are masters at organization and research but may not want to work directly with the public. BTS Volunteers help with the preparation, organization, and completion of projects that continuously improve our education programs.
BTS Volunteers also assist with Project “STUFF,” the ongoing process where we “sort, toss, unpack, find, and file” everything from program kits to closets to donated recyclables.
If you are a super-organizer or like the satisfaction that comes from knowing your work helps to keep our education programs running smoothly, get in touch with us about becoming a BTS Volunteer!
Projects may include:
- Researching background information to add to new and already existing program topics
- Cataloging and reshelving our extensive library in our Resource Room,
- Fact-checking information for already existing program topics,
- Organizing arts and crafts supplies and storage areas
- Inventorying program kits that contain signage, visual aids, lesson plans, games, and presentation props
- Creating handouts, signage, or publicity for events or programs
- Filing, sorting, laminating, and copying,
- Revising current program descriptions, outlines, and classroom materials
- Performing individualized tasks or research based on your interests and time availability.

Education Volunteer Location: Newburyport, MA Do you love the outdoors and sharing nature with children? Become an Education Volunteer at Joppa Flats! Throughout the school year, Joppa Flats staff and volunteers offer a wide range of coastal ecology and birding programs for children on-site at Joppa Flats, at schools, and in various local habitats on Plum Island and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary Butterfly Garden Volunteers Location: Cummaquid, MA Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for gardeners interested in “adopting a butterfly garden” within the sanctuaries new Butterfly Mosaic Trail in Cummaquid. Adopters would be responsible for:
Stewardship of one of 10 small 12’x12’ native wildflower garden during the growing season including:
Weeding, watering, feeding, plant division and some plant propagation in our green house.
Other tasks might include interpretation for sanctuary visitors and nature walk co-leading if appropriate.

Farming and Animal Husbandry Volunteers Location: Barnstable, MA Assist our partners in Sustainable Agriculture, Ocean Song Farm, in farming, animal husbandry and other associated activities. Training for the various farm related chores will take place on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. to cultivate active crews and then formalize schedules that work them.
Activities and Opportunities can include:
- Gardening, weeding, watering, picking veggies and flowers
- Taking care of goats
- Cleaning chicken coops and nests
- Milking
- Worming of goats, trimming hooves
- Taking care of baby animals
- Getting supplies with us
- Fiber work
- Goat walks
- Moving fencing and helping with the grazing management
- Moving the her through shepherding
- Carpentry, building shelters and enclosures

Property/Ecological Management Volunteers Location: Cummaquid and East Falmouth MA Energetic people of all ages needed to help with a variety of ecological management projects and property work at Long Pasture and Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuaries. Projects include field habitat restoration, invasive tree and shrub removal, ornamental tree care and a variety of trail work including mowing. Qualifications: Ability to use hand tools and mowing equipment. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required. Sanctuary Volunteers Location: Barnstable, MA Ecological Management Team Member
If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Long Pasture by participating in conservation activities, such as trail clearing, invasive species removal, mowing and more. If you have carpentry skills, you can build nest boxes, tern decoys, and other projects to aid in attracting and managing wildlife.
Program Leader
If you have a background in education or working with groups, you may wish to lead our summer tidal flat explorations or natural history tours of Long Pasture. We will provide training and background materials, and you provide the enthusiasm. You will be rewarded by the joy and amazement of visitors discovering the flats and the sanctuary for the first time.
Educational Assistant
If you enjoy working with children, you can assist our educators during our summer morning art and ecology program for elementary aged kids. We may also have opportunities to help with classroom visits and field trips to the sanctuary. You can help to inspire a sense of wonder!
Special Events Assistant
If you would like to attend concerts and festivals, you can join in the festivities by selling tickets, manning a booth, offering information to guests, and of course, enjoying the view. You may also assist in event planning and marketing.
Citizen Scientist
If you are interested in wildlife and research, you can participate in one of Mass Audubon’s ongoing wildlife studies, such as Horseshoe Crab Population surveys, Osprey nest productivity monitoring, breeding bird censuses, and others. Your work will directly contribute to databases that track species over time.
Special Projects
If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Long Pasture, we invite you to meet with us and plan a special project. Previous projects have included creation of a lichen brochure, illustrations for nature guides, and photographing the sanctuary.

Visual Arts Center Gallery Volunteer Location: Canton, MA Exhibition Gallery Visitor Services
Duties:
Welcome visitors and take admission fees. Sell Mass Audubon memberships and gift shop items. Provide basic information to visitors about Mass Audubon and the Visual Arts Center (VAC); the current exhibition, and exhibition-related children’s activities. Do occasional other tasks (e.g. assistance with a mailing, tidying gift shop displays) as time permits.
Hours:
Desired commitment is one 2-hour period per week (2:00-4:00), Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. We request an initial commitment of 6 months.
Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing, responsible, good communication skills, able to work independently. Flexibility is essential, since duties will vary with fluctuating visitation. Experience working with the public. Familiarity with a cash register is a plus, but not required. Compensation and Benefits: VAC volunteers enjoy interacting with diverse audiences, extraordinary exhibitions and collections, and a dynamic staff. In addition, volunteers may have opportunities to view seldom-seen works of art in Mass Audubon’s collection and to meet visiting artists. The VAC is pleased to reward volunteers for their hard work and dedication with a 20% discount on gift shop purchases, a 20% (occasionally greater) discount on programs, and an invitation to the special annual volunteer recognition event. Wachusett Meadow Property/Ecological Management Volunteers Location: Princeton, MA Every Tuesday 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (or later), and/or the 3rd Sunday of every month 1 to 4 p.m.
Help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Come once, or come every week and become part of our growing group of volunteers. These positions assist a wide variety of property, maintenance, and ecological management projects such as buildings and grounds work, trail clearing, wildlife monitoring, and animal care. Independent, seasonal projects are also available. Tuesdays: ages 16 & up, Sunday: all ages welcome but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteer Opportunities at Wellfleet Bay Location: South Wellfleet, MA Exhibit Docent
As part of our “green building” renovation we have expanded our exhibit area. Docents help our visitors with bird sightings at the feeder observation windows, questions about the new tanks and exhibits, information about our green building design, and general sanctuary orientation. Shifts are 3-4 hours long, once a week in summer, flexible winter hours.
Qualifications: Ability to interact with visitors, and provide information to match varied levels of interest and knowledge. Some knowledge of birds and Cape Cod natural history useful, but training is provided.
