Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary Duck Derby Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA Join in the fun! The Duck Derby is our largest fundraiser, held in August at the Sanctuary. Duck Derby volunteers are instrumental in the event’s success and provide a myriad of support, from selling ducks pre-Derby, gathering items for the silent auction, staffing the Derby Festival, distributing event information, assisting with the actual race and more! These volunteers are busiest from May to August. Outreach Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA The Outreach volunteer will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to represent the Sanctuary at local events and to assist in educational program development and execution. We are looking for motivated, self-starters with the confidence to speak and present to the public and who also exhibit a thirst for knowledge and sharing that knowledge with others. Examples of Outreach volunteer duties include staffing a table at an outreach event, assisting a Teacher Naturalist in delivering a program to groups of all ages on or off of the Sanctuary and researching/developing program ideas for special events. Qualifications: Individuals should be able to travel to local destinations and should be comfortable on their feet. Experience teaching environmental science(s) is helpful but not necessary. Publicity Volunteer Location: Dartmouth, MA The Publicity volunteer will work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to promote Sanctuary events throughout the year, including the Allens Pond Duck Derby fundraiser which occurs in mid-August. We are looking for creative individuals with an interest in communicating about the Sanctuary and reaching a broad audience through varied media such as newspaper, TV, radio and internet. The Publicity volunteer will assist in promoting Sanctuary events by posting them to online calendars, emailing to media lists and distributing to local businesses and non-profits in person. Qualifications: Individuals should have good writing and communication skills. Experience writing press releases is helpful but not necessary. Shrubland Restoration Volunteer Location: Westport/Dartmouth, MA Shrubland Restoration Volunteers are needed at Allens Pond to help restore native plant species on sanctuary grounds. The main goal of this ongoing project is to eradicate invasive plant species, namely Multiflora Rose and Asiatic Bittersweet. The lands that have been invaded by these species are important winter habitat for bird species such as the Brown Thrasher and the Eastern Towhee. Northern Harriers also use this habitat. Upon the removal of invasive species, Allens Pond also needs assistance with planting native species. The presence of native flora will facilitate the use of this habitat by native bird and other animal species as well. Work may be, at times, physically demanding, but rewarding and instrumental in preserving the ecological integrity of areas in and around the sanctuary. Blue Hills Trailside Museum Volunteer Front Desk Representatives Location: Milton, MA The Blue Hills Trailside Museum features educational programs and exhibits that focus on the local natural history of the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s 7,000-acre Blue Hills Reservation, including live native, non-releasable wildlife. We are seeking front desk representatives to welcome our visitors, process purchases and Museum admissions with a cash register, promote Mass Audubon membership, answer telephone inquiries, provide hiking recommendations and related tasks. Weekly positions available for Fridays 10am-1pm, biweekly Saturdays 2pm-5pm, biweekly Sundays 10am-1pm and biweekly Sundays 1pm-4pm. Minimum commitment requested of 6 months. Qualifications: Individuals should enjoy speaking with the public, have experience in a customer service related position, and enjoy helping others to appreciate the natural world. Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary Sanctuary Volunteers Location: Worcester, MA Every Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, and the 1st Saturday of every month 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon, help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Come once or every week and become part of our growing group of sanctuary volunteers. Together with Sanctuary Director Deb Cary and other Mass Audubon staff, put up signs and markers, look for wildlife tracks, pick up branches, and fill the bird feeders. Projects are primarily outside. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without superivision required. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated. Visitor Services Volunteer Location: Natick, MA Broadmoor is a beautiful 854 acre wildlife sanctuary of the Massachusetts Audubon Society with 9 miles of trails through meadows, woodlands and marshes along the Charles River. We host thousands of visitors, program participants and school groups each year and need the assistance of:

Thursday & Saturday Property Crew Location: Easthampton, MA Connecticut River Valley Sanctuaries need Property Crew Volunteers to maintain native landscaping, post boundaries, maintain trails, repair buildings and equipment, ensure safety and comfort of visitors and program participants, build bird houses, prepare the sanctuaries for special events and more. This team meets every Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon at the Arcadia Visitor Center and some Saturdays also from 9 a.m. to noon. Some activities are indoors in our workshop and occur even on rainy days. Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary Crops Field Volunteers Location: Lincoln, MA Learn sustainable agriculture techniques as you assist our staff with seedlings in the green house, and classic field chores including seeding, transplanting, weeding, thinning, and harvesting vegetables. A wide array of crops and annual flowers are grown. Produce is sold at our on-location veggie stand, through our Community Supported Agriculture program, to restaurants and at downtown farmers’ markets. This is local farming at its best. Farm Stand Volunteer Location: Lincoln, MA This volunteer position will be stationed at our refurbished farm stand. You will be responsible for sharing with the public information on the items we grow and sell. Topics will include sustainable farming practices, the seasonality of our produce, providing taste tests for the public, and information on our value added products. Farm Stand volunteers will assist visitors by weighing vegetables, making sales, and handing out recipe cards. Training provided. Wildlife Care Location: Lincoln, MA Would you like to assist our Wildlife Care staff with the general care and maintenance of a collection of native, non-releasable wildlife? We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help us in the daily routine of cleaning / maintaining enclosures, and feeding select mammals and bird residents of Drumlin Farm. Qualifications: Qualified candidates will have an interest in gaining experience in the animal care field. Individuals must be able to walk on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 lbs, work on their feet for hours at a time, and have the ability to bend, squat, crouch and kneel while cleaning all types of indoor and outdoor enclosures. Individuals must be age18 years or older. Commitment: A minimum of one 4 hour morning (9:00-12:00) session a week (year-round); minimum of 6 months commitment required. YOU can help Felix Neck and the wildlife in our island backyard. Volunteers are needed to monitor salamanders, identify and record dragonflies and damselflies, survey breeding birds, count spawning horseshoe crabs, and more! Training is provided.
Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history. Creative and flexible. Responsible and prompt. Ability to work without supervision required.
Visitor Services Assistant
Be the face of Felix Neck. Our Visitor Center needs volunteers to meet and greet visitors, answer phones, collect admissions, handle gift shop sales, register visitors for programs and answer questions about wildlife and the Sanctuary.
Qualifications: Volunteers must have a pleasant and professional manner and the ability to make visitors and callers feel welcome. Experience with or willingness to learn how to use a cash register and credit card machine. Training is provided. Three or four hour shifts available weekly or bi-weekly. Flexible schedules.
Education Program Assistant
Conduct environmental education programs at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Lead groups of visitors in hands-on discovery of the various habitats at Felix Neck. During the summer season education program volunteers lead Seashore Discovery programs for groups of visitors ranging in size from five to fifty-five people. Training is provided.
Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history and environmental education. Creative and flexible. High school diploma and some teaching experience. Basic natural history science background and local natural history needed. Responsible and prompt. Minimum of 18 years of age. Able to commit to volunteering at least one day a week during the summer season.
Property/Ecological Management
If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Felix Neck by participating in a wide variety of property and maintenance projects, such as invasive species removal, trail maintenance, buildings and grounds work, light carpentry, and painting. Help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required.
Gardening
Share your skills or learn new ones in our beautiful butterfly garden. Work on your own or have fun with others on scheduled volunteer days. Ability to work without supervision required.
Group Projects
Do you have a group that needs a community service project? If you do, then Felix Neck is the place for you on Martha’s Vineyard. We are looking for groups of between 10 and 25 people to work on various projects on the Sanctuary that center around trail work and ecological management. Please call to schedule your group.
Special Events
Our Fall Festival, the day after Thanksgiving, attracts hundreds of people. Join us in the festivities by taking admissions, assisting in the craft tent, or serving food.
Special Projects
If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Felix Neck, we invite you to meet with us and let us know of your ideas and special skills. Previous projects have included mural painting, butterfly garden design, wood duck box construction, screen house construction, and curriculum development. Your creative energies are welcome.

Goat Getters Location: Belmont, MA The goats will be returning to Habitat in early April to help manage Habitat’s meadows. We need a variety of volunteers to ensure the goats are well cared for. In addition to the joy that comes from working with the goats you will receive training and become part of a dedicated team.
Goat Tenders: Care for the goats and their surroundings including: clean out hut; spread compost; provide water, hay, bedding and minerals; brush and observe; move goats from hut to browse area; and manage electronet fencing.

Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Some experience with farm animals is helpful but not required. A commitment of at least one weekly session for 10 weeks is requested and ongoing care from April through October is ideal. Recommended for two or more people per session so bring a friend!
Shepherds: Spend an hour or more per week near the goats watching their habits, answering visitor questions, warning dog walkers to keep their dogs on a short leash, and enjoying the company of goats. Weekdays and/or weekends 9am to 6pm. All ages. Under 14 years of age with accompanying adult.
Fence Minders: Learn to manage and mend the electronet fencing; monitor and prepare fence lines; and assist in moving fencing and signage every couple weeks.
Goat Care Coordinator: Assist in scheduling goat volunteers and related activities.

Habitat Intergenerational Program (HIP) Coordinator Location: Belmont, MA The coordinator, a volunteer position, will oversee HIP, an organization that enables people of many generations to participate in environmental service projects and become stewards of their environment. HIP links people of all ages, dispels myths about how the young & old should act, and promotes the joy of learning and serving together. The coordinator will connect the existing HIP programs, maintain close contact with the HIP Steering Committee, call and coordinate meetings, promote the uniqueness of HIP’s intergenerational focus, facilitate publicity, manage program resources & funds, conduct outreach, tally volunteer hours, and potentially pursue funding possibilities. Qualifications: Candidates need to relate well to people, be able to bring people of all ages together to maximize HIP’s intergenerational component, have good PR skills, and be well grounded in the Mass Audubon mission. Joppa Flats Education Center Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Location: Newburyport, MA Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) Volunteers are adults who are masters at organization and research but may not want to work directly with the public. BTS Volunteers help with the preparation, organization, and completion of projects that continuously improve our education programs.
BTS Volunteers also assist with Project “STUFF,” the ongoing process where we “sort, toss, unpack, find, and file” everything from program kits to closets to donated recyclables.

Projects may include:
- Researching background information to add to new and already existing program topics

- Creating handouts, signage, or publicity for events or programs

- Performing individualized tasks or research based on your interests and time availability.

Education Volunteer Location: Newburyport, MA Do you love the outdoors and sharing nature with children? Become an Education Volunteer at Joppa Flats! Throughout the school year, Joppa Flats staff and volunteers offer a wide range of coastal ecology and birding programs for children on-site at Joppa Flats, at schools, and in various local habitats on Plum Island and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary Butterfly Garden Volunteers Location: Cummaquid, MA Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for gardeners interested in 'adopting' a butterfly garden within the sanctuary's new Butterfly Mosaic Trail in Cummaquid. Adopters would be responsible for stewardship of one of 10 small 12’x12’ native wildflower garden during the growing season including, weeding, watering, feeding, plant division, and some plant propagation in our green house.
Other tasks may include interpretation for sanctuary visitors and nature walk co-leading if appropriate.

Sanctuary Volunteers Location: Barnstable, MA Ecological Management Team Member
If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Long Pasture by participating in conservation activities, such as trail clearing, invasive species removal, mowing and more. If you have carpentry skills, you can build nest boxes, tern decoys, and other projects to aid in attracting and managing wildlife.
Program Leader
If you have a background in education or working with groups, you may wish to lead our summer tidal flat explorations or natural history tours of Long Pasture. We will provide training and background materials, and you provide the enthusiasm. You will be rewarded by the joy and amazement of visitors discovering the flats and the sanctuary for the first time.
Educational Assistant
If you enjoy working with children, you can assist our educators during our summer morning art and ecology program for elementary aged kids. We may also have opportunities to help with classroom visits and field trips to the sanctuary. You can help to inspire a sense of wonder!
Special Events Assistant
If you would like to attend concerts and festivals, you can join in the festivities by selling tickets, manning a booth, offering information to guests, and of course, enjoying the view. You may also assist in event planning and marketing.
Citizen Scientist
If you are interested in wildlife and research, you can participate in one of Mass Audubon’s ongoing wildlife studies, such as Horseshoe Crab Population surveys, Osprey nest productivity monitoring, breeding bird censuses, and others. Your work will directly contribute to databases that track species over time.
Special Projects
If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Long Pasture, we invite you to meet with us and plan a special project. Previous projects have included creation of a lichen brochure, illustrations for nature guides, and photographing the sanctuary.

Museum of American Bird Art Gallery Volunteer Location: Canton, MA Exhibition Gallery Visitor Services
Duties:
Welcome visitors and take admission fees. Sell Mass Audubon memberships and gift shop items. Provide basic information to visitors about Mass Audubon and the Museum of American Bird Art (MABA); the current exhibition, and exhibition-related children’s activities. Do occasional other tasks (e.g. assistance with a mailing, tidying gift shop displays) as time permits.
Hours:
Desired commitment is one 2-hour period per week (2:00-4:00), Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. We request an initial commitment of 6 months.
Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing, responsible, good communication skills, able to work independently. Flexibility is essential, since duties will vary with fluctuating visitation. Experience working with the public. Familiarity with a cash register is a plus, but not required. Compensation and Benefits: MABA volunteers enjoy interacting with diverse audiences, extraordinary exhibitions and collections, and a dynamic staff. In addition, volunteers may have opportunities to view seldom-seen works of art in Mass Audubon’s collection and to meet visiting artists. MABA is pleased to reward volunteers for their hard work and dedication with a 20% discount on gift shop purchases, a 20% (occasionally greater) discount on programs, and an invitation to the special annual volunteer recognition event. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Ecological Management Volunteers Location: S. Wellfleet, MA We are starting a regular schedule of ecological management projects every Tuesday and Saturday (except Christmas Day and New Years Day). From 9:30 a.m. to noon, we’ll work on field restoration and invasive plant removal. This project will go through March and in the spring we’ll then turn our attention to creating terrapin turtle habitat. Volunteer Opportunities at Wellfleet Bay Location: South Wellfleet, MA Exhibit Docent
As part of our “green building” renovation we have expanded our exhibit area. Docents help our visitors with bird sightings at the feeder observation windows, questions about the new tanks and exhibits, information about our green building design, and general sanctuary orientation. Shifts are 3-4 hours long, once a week in summer, flexible winter hours.
Qualifications: Ability to interact with visitors, and provide information to match varied levels of interest and knowledge. Some knowledge of birds and Cape Cod natural history useful, but training is provided.
