Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary Property Assistant (part time (20-24 hrs/wk), seasonal (April-Aug 2013) Location: Natick, MA Purpose: Directly assist the Property Manager with the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, trails, buildings and other related maintenance of (2) separate properties located in Natick and Holliston.
Duties: Collaborate with the Property Manager and other staff to establish and follow through with a schedule of tasks. Duties will include trimming back overgrowth and cleaning up fallen limbs and trees along trails and fields, mowing grass, maintenance/repair of bridges and boardwalks, picking up trash along roadsides and other parts of the sanctuary, removal of weeds and invasive plants in unwanted areas, monitoring trails, driving pickup truck, set up and take down of materials, supplies and water for programs , maintaining buildings and property to ensure the overall safety, upkeep and function.
Qualifications: Dependable, self motivated, having good organizational and communication skills, ability to work both independently and as part of a team, physically fit and willing to work outside in various weather conditions, (heat, rain, etc). Experience with basic tools such as rakes, shovels, hand saws, pruners hammers is preferred as well as small power tools and equipment such as walk behind and small ride on mowers, gas trimmers, electric drills and saws. Qualified applicants should be at least 20 years of age with a clean driving record and have had their license for at least 3 years. Successfully complete a CORI and SORI. Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal Field Assistant I positions to conduct research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Responsibilities include 1) collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species, 3) accomplish the wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program, 3) assist with sanctuary-based coastal waterbird work throughout the region, 4) assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create GIS/Google Earth maps of coastal resources, 5) assist in compilation of data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities. Qualifications: Applicants should be working toward a B.S. or B.A. in environmental science or related field, or equivalent experience. Prior experience in avian field research and management preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather), and have their own vehicle. The Coastal Waterbird Program at Mass Audubon is seeking to enroll shorebird monitoring trainees to gain experience and skills in endangered species management, coastal nesting bird ecology, field research and environmental education. Trainees will be mentored by Mass Audubon staff in the monitoring and management of Piping Plovers, Least and Common Terns, and American Oystercatchers. Activities will include construction and maintenance of protective fencing, wildlife tracking, educating the public about endangered species conservation and research. Trainees will be assigned to from 1-6 sites, where they will have the opportunity to experience a variety of coastal habitats.Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong interest in wildlife management and conservation biology. Applicants should have good communication (oral, written) skills, be in good physical condition, be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather), and have their own vehicle. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Environmental Educator Location: South Wellfleet, MA April – June 2013 with possible extension
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic environmental educator to join our staff. Mass Audubon‘s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1100-acre coastal sanctuary on Cape Cod. The Environmental Educator will teach introductory level programs on local wildlife ecology to school groups both at our sanctuary and off-site. This work will take place primarily outside on trails through the salt marsh, tidal flats, and forest. The Environmental Educator will lead interpretative nature walks, engage students in exploration and inquiry activities, and identify local wildlife species. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, wildlife ecology, or closely related field; experience teaching children in indoor and outdoor settings; and a working knowledge of Cape Cod natural history and wildlife. The ability to relate ecological concepts to a diverse range of people and ages is imperative. A desire to improve your skills as a naturalist and teacher, flexibility, love of nature, and a desire to work outside are required. A sense of humor and strong interpersonal skills are essential. Bird identification skills are preferred. This position requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire, as well as successful completion of a CORI and SORI.
Compensation and Benefits: Starting salary is $10/hour. The number of hours will vary weekly.
