Lead Hummingbird Teacher

Lead Teacher of Hummingbirds is responsible for teaching, overseeing three counselors and the daily operation of the Hummingbird (pre-school program)

Teacher/Counselors
Location: Easthampton, MA

Teacher/Counselors are needed for the following programs: Hummingbirds, ages 4 ½-6; Kingfishers; ages 7-8, and Great Blue Herons; ages 9-12. Each program will have daily natural history themes such as birds, trees, and insects, which are studied through discovery hikes, games and crafts. Great Blue Herons will go canoeing two days during a two-week session. Staff will be responsible for planning, and preparing daily lessons and assuring the safety and well being of campers.

Schedule:June 11-August 30 (some flexibility in these dates)

Qualifications: Applicants should be at least 18 years of age, have experience working with young children, and a sense of fun. Environmental Education experience is very helpful. Applicants must have CPR/First aid certification or willing to obtain. Counselors interested in working with the Great Blue Herons should have experience canoeing and water safety experience or willingness to obtain. CORI, SORI checks required.

Blue Hills Trailside Museum

Adventurer Camp Educator
Location: Milton, MA

Adventurer Camp Educators lead groups of campers ranging from ages 11-14 during our summer camp located at the Norman Smith Education Center in the Blue Hills Reservation. Adventurer Camp Educators develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate nature-based activities, including hikes, games and crafts, supervise the health and safety of campers, and communicate with camp staff and parents. The end of each session includes an overnight on and off site.

Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 21 with 2 years of driving experience and a clean driving record. Have an interest and general knowledge of natural history and/or education. Have or working toward a bachelor’s in environmental studies, biology, education or related field is a plus but not necessary. Must have previous experience working with and enjoy being with children; have the ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently, have a positive attitude, love of nature, and a willingness to learn. Current certification in Community CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is required.

Schedule: Training occurs June 11-13 and June 17-21. Camp runs Monday-Friday, July 15 - August 23; Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with 4 overnight classes on Thursday-Friday evening.

Assistant Camp Director
Location: Milton, MA

The Assistant Camp Director will support the Camp Director in the daily operations of camp and directly supervise the aftercare program from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., located at the Norman Smith Education Center in the Blue Hills Reservation. The Assistant Camp Director will assist in many of the administrative aspects of camp, oversee the health and safety of campers, communicate with parents, assist in the supervision of camp staff and high-school aged volunteers and help camp staff with program planning and substitute teach when needed.

Qualifications: Applicant must be at least 25 years old. Have at least two years of camp experience in a leadership role. At least two years of experience working with and enjoy being with children ages 5-14 years old, have an interest and general knowledge of natural history and/or education. Must have the ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently. Must be comfortable in a leadership role, have strong interpersonal skills, have an enthusiastic and positive attitude, a love of nature and have a willingness to learn. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, computer skills in areas such as word processing, spreadsheets, database entry and blogging and a strong commitment to high quality customer service. Current certification in Community CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is required.

Schedule: Training occurs June 11-13 and June 17-21. Camp runs Monday -Friday, June 24- August 25. Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with occasional morning hours and overnights during the summer.

There is a possibility to work part-time, as needed, starting June 1st.

Compensation and Benefits: $10.00 - $12.00/hour depending on experience, housing available for $40/week.

Boston Nature Center

Assistant Director
Location: Boston, MA

The Boston Nature Center Day Camp is filled with singing, playing outside, acting silly and lots more. We are looking for an Assistant Director that will support our goal of blending a high quality environmental education with all the elements of a traditional camp; helping children find a connection to nature while receiving all the benefits that come along with a great camp experience. Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary

Counselor-In-Training Volunteers (2-3 week long positions)
Location: Natick, MA

Broadmoor Summer Camp is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist camp educators with hands-on activities, games, crafts and songs. Have fun exploring fields, forests and marsh, and hiking up to 9 miles of trail with small groups of campers, grades k-5.

Join Broadmoor’s team of committed staff who enjoy working and learning together. Counselors in Training set an example for campers; help camp educators set-up equipment, lead and create activities, assist with management and group control and communicate with staff regularly. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary

Environmental Educator / Day Camp Counselors (4)
Location: Martha‘s Vineyard

Teach campers ages 4 -13 about the nature and wildlife of Martha’s Vineyard. Provide guidance, instruction and supervision of campers in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations. Work with our team to plan, prepare and conduct age appropriate lessons and hands-on activities. Lead explorations, stories, crafts, nature games and activities such as seashore exploration, insect studies and ponding. Programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities. Some camp session activities may include kayaking, overnight campouts, and off-site field trips.

Responsibilities:

  • Protect the physical and emotional welfare of campers, fellow staff, and self
  • Work with peers to develop and teach nature camp lesson plans and prepare materials as needed
  • Maintain an organized work environment and participate in daily Sanctuary cleaning tasks
  • Lead public programs for visitors
  • Assume additional related duties as requested
Essential Functions:

Applicants must be able to:
  • Visually identify safety issues related to camp operation
  • Monitor camp groups in all types of environments (forest, field, pond, shore) and listen for key safety concerns and alerts
  • Navigate, run, and play on trails, and easily access all areas of Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary by foot
  • Appropriately address and communicate with campers and guardians

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old by June 19, 2013.
  • Have experience and enjoy working with children.
  • Have a strong interest in natural science, wildlife, and/or outdoor education.
  • Show ability to design and implement nature-based lessons including games and crafts.
  • Have certifications in community CPR (child and adult levels) and basic first aid current through August 2013 or willingness to obtain before June 19, 2013.
  • Lifeguard certification is necessary for two of the positions available.
  • Have experience leading youth groups independently and be organized and self-motivated.
  • Candidates must be flexible and creative.
  • Favorable completion of both the Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information (expanded CORI & SORI) according to Mass Audubon’s guidelines is necessary for employment. A private firm will perform out-of-state resident background checks.
  • Provide documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and complete the camp’s health form and waiver.
  • Successfully complete pre-camp training including Field School at Mass Audubon’s Wildwood Sanctuary, June 11-13, 2013.
  • Be available June 10 - August 16, 2013 for 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Potential option to work through August 31, 2012.) As temporary seasonal employees, staff are paid for only the scheduled hours worked, and may be asked to take unpaid leave depending on camp enrollment.

Compensation and Benefits: $9.00-$12.00/hour based on qualifications. Some reduced cost shared housing opportunities may be available.

Junior Environmental Educator / Day Camp Counselors (2)

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

Assistant Counselor
Location: Hamond Nature Center, Marblehead, MA

Lead nature activities and act as an assistant counselor in a small natural history day camp for three one-week sessions. The camp emphasizes group cooperation, nature study, and experiential learning for children ages 5 – 10.

Qualifications:

Teen Travel Counselor
Location: Topsfield, MA

Lead nature activities and act as a counselor and mentor in a natural history day camp for teens ages 12 to 14. The camps emphasize group cooperation, nature study, and experiential learning. Instructors conduct field trips to a variety of locations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Qualifications:

  1. Education: B.A. or B.S. in early childhood education or related education degree with appropriate work experience.

  2. Experience in leading natural history activities relating to local environments in a camp setting.

  3. Ability to work cooperatively and independently.

  4. Interest in and understanding of children, and a desire to share outdoor experiences with them.

  5. American Red Cross First Aid and Community CPR Certification.

Joppa Flats Education Center

After-Camp Care Coordinator (June-August 2013)
Location: Newburyport, MA

The After-Camp Care Coordinator will be responsible for supervising children in the After-Camp Care Program. The After-Camp Care Program is scheduled to run Tuesday through Friday, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., for the sessions for children ages 6-8. On alternating weeks, After-Camp Care is scheduled Tuesday through Friday, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. for children ages 9-10. The coordinator’s hours will begin 30 minutes before the start time and end 30 minutes after the last child has been picked up. The coordinator will work with the Camp Program Coordinator and the camp staff during the week to schedule activities and organize material needs.

This position is designed for someone who enjoys working with children on an informal basis. Our after-camp care is a “non-camp” activity space with self-guided games, small group activities, and books. The coordinator supervises and assists the children, and may lead games, songs, or read stories. The coordinator is responsible for the safety and well-being of each child at after-care and must be responsible and professional to manage and coordinate the parent pick-up procedure.

The term for this position is during June, July, and August for the 7 weeks of camp, depending on demand. Camp begins June 18 and ends August 16. Joppa Flats is seeking one person for the After Camp Care Coordinator position.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Camp Program Coordinator to develop activities and schedules.
  • Daily preparation and clean up of after camp care.
  • Leading and supervising after camp care activities with children ages 6-10 in a positive, safe, and fun environment.
  • Maintaining a safe After-Camp Care Program by following all camp safety guidelines.
  • Working with the Camp Program Coordinator for evaluation, feedback, and parent communication; attending sessions of camp staff training.
  • Documenting and reporting issues, accidents, and situations so that we can evaluate and learn from them.
  • Presenting a pleasant, polite, and friendly demeanor for campers and parents

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • First Aid and CPR certification required (must become certified before camp begins), a valid driver‘s license, and successful completion of CORI and SORI.
  • Creativity, humor, reliability, flexibility, patience, enthusiasm, and strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with people of all ages, interests and backgrounds;
  • Experience in a camp leadership, team leadership, or mentoring position a plus;
  • Local knowledge of New England coastal ecology and passion for conservation and education a plus, but not required;
  • Background in early childhood education, child development, or other youth-focused field a plus.
Commitment: 13-15 weeks, contingent on demand, beginning no later than June 10, 2013

Schedule/Hours: Schedule changes weekly. At most, Tuesday through Friday, 2-2.5 hours per day; maximum 12 hours per week.

Compensation and Benefits: $10-13 per hour depending on experience

July 1 to August 16, 2013, with an opportunity to work August 19 to August 30 at the Wellfleet camp

Work full-time on Cape Cod teaching natural history to children from Pre-school to Grade 8 in Chatham and surrounding areas (will work with similar age groups all summer). Some instructors are responsible for taking campers on off-site field trips, including hikes, snorkeling & kayaking trips, and other natural history excursions.

Qualifications: Must be familiar with Cape Cod natural history (especially marine biology) and have experience working with children outdoors. Helpful to have or be working towards a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies, Biology, Education, or related field, and be Red Cross First Aid/ CPR certified.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary starting at $9.50/hour; shared housing available at $30 per week.

Day Camp Instructor in Wellfleet
Location: Wellfleet, MA

June 17 to August 30, 2013

Work full-time at an 1100-acre coastal sanctuary on Cape Cod teaching natural history to children from Pre-school to Grade 8 (will work with similar age groups all summer). Responsibilities include working with a partner to develop, plan, and implement natural history lessons, as well as conduct public programs for families on and off the sanctuary. Some instructors are responsible for taking campers on off-site field trips, including hikes, snorkeling & kayaking trips, and other natural history excursions.

Wildwood

Counselor/Waterfront Instructor (multiple positions)
Location: Rindge, NH

Plan, supervise, and teach waterfront activities including swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing, and maintain a high level of safety. Live with and care for campers and lead group development and recreation activities. Plan and teach a variety of environmental/outdoor activities.

Qualifications: Age 18+, high school graduate. Experience working with children in an outdoor, preferably camp setting and interest in teaching and learning about the environment. College-level study in science, natural history, ecology, conservation, education, or other camp-related topics is desired. Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certifications current through the camp season, complete application, reference checks, and satisfactory background checks required. Basic Water Rescue, sailing/paddling certifications, or experience teaching swimming and boating desired.

Dates of Employment: June 10 – August 29, 2013

Compensation and Benefits: Competitive salary, room and board included. 24-hour period off each week, additional free/planning time each day and between sessions.

Leader-in-Training Facilitator (multiple positions)
Location: Rindge, NH

Work with the Leader-in-Training (LIT) Director to facilitate and evaluate all aspects of the LIT program including training, coaching, supervising, and evaluating LIT participants. Live with and care for teens in the LIT program. Co-lead teens in an off-site overnight camping/canoe trip. Work with Unit Leaders and Directors to integrate LIT program into overall Wildwood program. Help to plan & provide other camp programs.

Qualifications: Age 21+. Experience working with teens, working at a summer camp, teaching environmental education, teaching leadership skills, participating in day hikes or short overnight camping trips. Valid driver’s license, First Aid and CPR certifications current through the camp season, complete application, reference checks, and satisfactory background checks required.
