Statewide Volunteer Day Work for Wildlife
Our fifth annual Statewide Volunteer Day was Saturday April 30, 2011
Thank you to all our 2011 volunteers! More than 750 volunteers at 14 sites helped us spruce up trails and gardens, haul brush, battle invasive species, and pick up trash. And this year, we had KISS 108 broadcasting live from the Boston Nature Center, REI handing out free goodies at Ipswich River, and a girl scout troop made lunch for everyone at Moose Hill!
Specifically we:
- Installed 140 feet of fencing
- Planted 104 plants
- Spread approximately 73 yards of mulch and wood chips
- Removed 83 bags of trash including 30 pounds of glass and metal, a lawn mower, a bed frame, a lawn chair, a hub cap, several rugs, a car bumper, a mattress, and a tee pee.
- Cleared 31 truckloads of invasive and non-native plants
- Spruced up 33-plus gardens
- Split or stacked 6 cords of wood
- Built 4 structures include raised vegetable beds, a bridge, and an ADA-accessible picnic table
- Used 3.5 gallons of paint and stain for picnic tables, benches, bird houses, and bird blinds
- Cleaned-up or enhanced 3 nature play areas
- Created or reblazed 2.25 miles of trail
- Uncovered 2 birds nests (one with an egg still in it), rabbit bones, a snake mummy, and a box turtle
Be sure to check out the photo slideshow of the event.
