Wellfleet, MA This position is 20 hours/week from November to April and 40 hours/week from May to October.
- Organize and coordinate office operations and procedures. Hire, train, and
supervise office administrative staff.
- Answer phone calls and routine inquiries. Handle requests for information and data. Oversee and assist with program registration.
- Prepare time sheets. Maintain employee attendance records.
- Maintain office equipment and office supply inventory.
- Responsible for accounts receivable and payable, bank deposits, and credit card reconciliation.
- Perform a variety of secretarial duties using Microsoft Office.
- Maintain office records. Ensure protection and security of files and records.
- Responsible for facility rental (nature center, campground, dormitory) and vehicle assignments.
- Perform other related duties as required.
40 hours per week; may be required to work on weekends and/or evenings. Travel to off-Cape meetings is required.Qualifications: Applicant must have proficient knowledge of office administration, particularly bookkeeping and bill paying knowledge and experience, as well as the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in preparing and entering information. Must have excellent skills in the following areas: interpersonal and customer relations; attention to detail; planning, organizing, and prioritizing; problem solving; written and verbal communication; MS Office at a highly proficient level; and time management. Back to top Member Recruitment Specialist Location: Wellfleet, MA Temporary/Seasonal (June 24 through September 3, 2012) Represent the Member Services team at the admissions area of Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (in Wellfleet). Recruit members for Mass Audubon, and facilitate the admission process for existing members. Provide regular updates to the Director of Membership. Handle confidential and sensitive information pertaining to Mass Audubon members in a secure manner. Work with Member Services and Wellfleet Bay staff to ensure requests for information and assistance from members and visitors are handled in a timely manner. Qualifications: A high school degree or equivalent is required, and previous experience in a professional work environment is desirable. The ideal candidate will be friendly, outgoing, enjoy interacting with the public, and have demonstrated success in customer service and/or sales. An interest in conservation and the mission of Mass Audubon is a plus.
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, and every other Sunday; Hours are 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Work is outdoors and requires standing for many of the scheduled hours. Seasonal Marine Invertebrate and Fish Research Assistant Location: South Wellfleet, MA This position is based at our 800-acre coastal wildlife sanctuary and involves work on three different projects around Wellfleet Harbor, including horseshoe crab spawning surveys, monitoring a restored oyster reef, and sampling forage fish using beach seines. Position runs mid-April through July and possibly longer. The specific duties are:
- Organizing and conducting horseshoe crab spawning surveys, juvenile surveys, and tagging of adults for a mark-recapture study. This includes organizing volunteers to help with surveys of multiple beaches.
- Assisting in a study of a restored oyster reef including monitoring of invertebrates using quadrats and sediment cores, quantifying oyster demographics, surveying birds, sampling fish, and possibly overseeing an experimental harvest.
- Conducting fish surveys around Wellfleet harbor using beach seines.
- Entering, proofing, and summarizing data and writing summary reports.
Qualifications: Working toward or have received a Bachelor‘s Degree in marine biology or related field. Field experience and an interest in marine invertebrates or marine biology. Willingness to spend long hours outdoors in the sun and on tidal flats and in salt marshes and also willingness to conduct horseshoe crab surveys at night. Applicants should be in good physical condition, be able to work flexible hours, and have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle. Strong preference is given to those with local housing. Compensation and Benefits: Pay is $10/hour. Volunteers are valued members of the Mass Audubon team and provide an important link to our local communities. Volunteer Front Desk and Gift Shop Location: South Wellfleet, MA This is a terrific introduction to the Sanctuary and a great way to meet new people. Greet and check in our visitors and sell memberships and gift shop items. Shifts are about four hours long, once a week or every other. Qualifications: A pleasant and professional manner and the ability to make visitors feel welcome. Experience with or willingness to learn cash registers. Training provided. Back to top Volunteer Opportunities at Wellfleet Bay Location: South Wellfleet, MA Exhibit Docent
As part of our “green building” renovation we have expanded our exhibit area. Docents help our visitors with bird sightings at the feeder observation windows, questions about the new tanks and exhibits, information about our green building design, and general sanctuary orientation. Shifts are 3-4 hours long, once a week in summer, flexible winter hours.
Qualifications: Ability to interact with visitors, and provide information to match varied levels of interest and knowledge. Some knowledge of birds and Cape Cod natural history useful, but training is provided.
