Camp

Environmental Educator / Day Camp Counselors (4)
Location: Martha‘s Vineyard

Teach campers ages 4 -13 about the nature and wildlife of Martha’s Vineyard. Provide guidance, instruction and supervision of campers in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations. Work with our team to plan, prepare and conduct age appropriate lessons and hands-on activities. Lead explorations, stories, crafts, nature games and activities such as seashore exploration, insect studies and ponding. Programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities. Some camp session activities may include kayaking, overnight campouts, and off-site field trips.

Responsibilities:

  • Protect the physical and emotional welfare of campers, fellow staff, and self
  • Work with peers to develop and teach nature camp lesson plans and prepare materials as needed
  • Maintain an organized work environment and participate in daily Sanctuary cleaning tasks
  • Lead public programs for visitors
  • Assume additional related duties as requested

    Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old by June 15, 2010.
  • Have experience and enjoy working with children
  • Have a strong interest in natural science, wildlife, and/or outdoor education
  • Show ability to design and implement nature-based lessons including games and crafts
  • Have certifications in community CPR (child and adult levels) and basic first aid current through August 2010 or willingness to obtain before June 15, 2010
  • Lifeguard certification is necessary for two of the four positions available.
  • Have experience leading youth groups independently and be organized and self-motivated
  • Candidates must be flexible and creative.
  • Favorable completion of both the Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information (expanded CORI & SORI) according to Mass Audubon’s guidelines is necessary for employment. A private firm will perform out-of-state resident background checks.
  • Provide documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and complete the camp’s health form and waiver
  • Successfully complete pre-camp training
  • Be available June 8 – 10, and June 14 - August 20, 2010 for 40 hours/week
  • As temporary seasonal employees, staff are paid for only the scheduled hours worked, and may be asked to take unpaid leave depending on camp enrollment.

    Benefits: $8.00-$12.00/hour based on qualifications. Training is paid at state minimum wage. Some shared housing opportunities may be available.

    Part-Time Camp Counselor
    Location: Martha‘s Vineyard

    Supervise a group of up to ten children in our Extended Day Program after camp from 2:15 – 5:15 pm, Monday through Friday. Plan, prepare and lead age appropriate activities for campers. Program offerings may include nature explorations, crafts, active games, short walks, and stories. Provide guidance, instruction and supervision of campers in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations.

    Education Coordinator II
    Location: Edgartown (Martha’s Vineyard), MA

    Mass Audubon’s Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown, MA is a community treasure on Martha’s Vineyard. For over 40 years, education, conservation, and wildlife protection has been our passion and our mission. Felix Neck seeks a dynamic educator to coordinate all aspects of environmental education programs, including designing, planning, and teaching school and public programs. Responsibilities additionally include directing and overseeing Fern and Feather Natural History Day Camp for children, including the hiring and supervising seasonal staff, producing sanctuary newsletters and other promotional and marketing materials, community outreach, interpretive exhibit design and maintenance, and special events coordination. With our team of professional staff, the Education Coordinator works collaboratively to educate and inspire a commitment to protect our natural resources.

    Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biological or earth science, environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental education or Master’s degree in biological or earth science, environmental studies, nature interpretation, or education or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion. Knowledge of local natural history, environmental policies and conservation science issues desirable. Requires 2 years of prior supervisory experience of staff/volunteers. Requires 2 years of prior experience in budget development and management, as well as revenue forecasting and financial recordkeeping. If managing camp, must meet requirements for camp directors consistent with State and ACA standards. Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire. Water Safety certification required, Lifeguard preferred or the willingness to obtain. Requires successful completion of a CORI and SORI.

    Visitor Services Assistant
    Location: Edgartown, MA

    Mass Audubon at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary seeks a Visitor Services/Gift Shop Assistant. Greet visitors, answer telephone, and assist in management of gift shop. Support all staff with administrative projects as needed.

    Qualifications: Requires excellent telephone, computer and organizational skills. April – October, 14 hours per week includes weekends.

    Volunteering with Mass Audubon
    Felix Neck offers a variety of exciting volunteer opportunities and internships for people of all interests and experience levels. Volunteers are valued members of the Mass Audubon team and provide an important link to our local communities. Whether you have a lifetime interest in nature or are just getting started, Felix Neck has a place for you.

    Volunteer Opportunities
    Location: Edgartown, MA

    Visitor Services Assistant

    Be the face of Felix Neck. Our Visitor Center needs volunteers to meet and greet visitors, answer phones, collect admissions, handle gift shop sales, register visitors for programs and answer questions about wildlife and the Sanctuary.

    Qualifications: Volunteers must have a pleasant and professional manner and the ability to make visitors and callers feel welcome. Experience with or willingness to learn how to use a cash register and credit card machine. Training is provided. Three or four hour shifts available weekly or bi-weekly. Flexible schedules.

    Education Program Assistant

    Conduct environmental education programs at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Lead groups of visitors in hands-on discovery of the various habitats at Felix Neck. During the summer season education program volunteers lead Seashore Discovery programs for groups of visitors ranging in size from five to fifty-five people. Training is provided.

    Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history and environmental education. Creative and flexible. High school diploma and some teaching experience. Basic natural history science background and local natural history needed. Responsible and prompt. Minimum of 18 years of age. Able to commit to volunteering at least one day a week during the summer season.

    Property/Ecological Management

    If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Felix Neck by participating in a wide variety of property and maintenance projects, such as invasive species removal, trail maintenance, buildings and grounds work, light carpentry, and painting. Help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated.

    Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required.

    Gardening

    Share your skills or learn new ones in our beautiful butterfly garden. Work on your own or have fun with others on scheduled volunteer days. Ability to work without supervision required.

    Group Projects

    Do you have a group that needs a community service project? If you do, then Felix Neck is the place for you on Martha’s Vineyard. We are looking for groups of between 10 and 25 people to work on various projects on the Sanctuary that center around trail work and ecological management. Please call to schedule your group.

    Special Events

    Our Fall Festival, the day after Thanksgiving, attracts hundreds of people. Join us in the festivities by taking admissions, assisting in the craft tent, or serving food.

    Special Projects

    If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Felix Neck, we invite you to meet with us and let us know of your ideas and special skills. Previous projects have included mural painting, butterfly garden design, wood duck box construction, screen house construction, and curriculum development. Your creative energies are welcome.
