Camp

Environmental Educator / Day Camp Counselors (4)
Location: Martha‘s Vineyard

Teach campers ages 4 -13 about the nature and wildlife of Martha’s Vineyard. Provide guidance, instruction and supervision of campers in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations. Work with our team to plan, prepare and conduct age appropriate lessons and hands-on activities. Lead explorations, stories, crafts, nature games and activities such as seashore exploration, insect studies and ponding. Programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities. Some camp session activities may include kayaking, overnight campouts, and off-site field trips.

Junior Environmental Educator / Day Camp Counselors (2)
Location: Martha‘s Vineyard

Assist Environmental Educator/ Day Camp Counselors with guidance, instruction and supervision of campers ages 4 - 13 in accordance with Mass Audubon’s educational goals, American Camp Association standards, and the state’s health and safety regulations. Junior staff will lead games; act as role models, assist in maintaining safety, and help children make friends and feel comfortable outdoors in nature. Junior Day Camp Counselors will have the opportunity to observe different instruction styles, and to lead activities such as explorations, stories, crafts, nature games, seashore walks, insect studies, and ponding under the supervision of an instructor.

Responsibilities:

  • Protect the physical and emotional welfare of campers, fellow staff and self
  • Prepare materials for activities as needed
  • Lead songs and games for campers
  • Maintain an organized work environment and participate in daily Sanctuary cleaning tasks
  • Conduct public programs for visitors
  • Assume additional related duties as requested

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old by June 15, 2012
  • Have experience and enjoy working with children and be creative and flexible
  • Have a strong interest in natural science, wildlife and/or outdoor education
  • Show an interest in designing and implementing nature-based activities including games and crafts
  • Have certifications in community CPR (child and adult levels) and basic first aid current through August 2012 or be willing to obtain before June 15, 2012
  • Favorable completion of both the Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information (expanded CORI & SORI) according to the Mass Audubon’s guidelines (A private firm will perform out-of-state resident background checks.)
  • Provide documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and complete the camp’s health form and waiver
  • Provide the camp with a work permit from their school administrator (obtain once hired)
  • Successfully complete pre-camp training including Coastal Field School at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Cape Cod, June 14-15, 2012.
  • Be available June 13 - August 17, 2012 for 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • As temporary seasonal employees, staff are paid for only the scheduled hours worked and may be asked to take unpaid leave depending on camp enrollment.

Benefits: $9.00/hour.

Coastal Waterbird Field Assistant I
Location: Multiple locations

Mid-May to mid-August 2012

Multiple positions based at:

Mass Audubon is seeking to fill seasonal Field Assistant I positions to conduct research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources. Responsibilities include 1) collect biological data on nesting, foraging and migrating species of coastal waterbirds including abundance and distribution of target species, 3) accomplish the wildlife management and education objectives of the Coastal Waterbird Program, 3) assist with sanctuary-based coastal waterbird work throughout the region, 4) assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create GIS/Google Earth maps of coastal resources, 5) assist in compilation of data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities.

Qualifications: Applicants should be working toward a B.S. or B.A. in environmental science or related field, or equivalent experience. Prior experience in avian field research and management preferred. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition, be willing to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (dependent upon wildlife and weather), and have their own vehicle.

Benefits: This is a full time position from mid-May through mid-August. Rate of payment is $9.50-$11.50/hour depending on experience. Housing may be available for payroll deduction of $25-35/wk. Field travel reimbursement will be provided. For more information, visit www.massaudubon.org/cwp

Felix Neck offers a variety of exciting volunteer opportunities and internships for people of all interests and experience levels. Volunteers are valued members of the Mass Audubon team and provide an important link to our local communities. Whether you have a lifetime interest in nature or are just getting started, Felix Neck has a place for you.

Volunteer

Volunteer Opportunities
Location: Edgartown, MA

Citizen Scientists

YOU can help Felix Neck and the wildlife in our island backyard. Volunteers are needed to monitor salamanders, identify and record dragonflies and damselflies, survey breeding birds, count spawning horseshoe crabs, and more! Training is provided.

Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history. Creative and flexible. Responsible and prompt. Ability to work without supervision required.

Visitor Services Assistant

Be the face of Felix Neck. Our Visitor Center needs volunteers to meet and greet visitors, answer phones, collect admissions, handle gift shop sales, register visitors for programs and answer questions about wildlife and the Sanctuary.

Qualifications: Volunteers must have a pleasant and professional manner and the ability to make visitors and callers feel welcome. Experience with or willingness to learn how to use a cash register and credit card machine. Training is provided. Three or four hour shifts available weekly or bi-weekly. Flexible schedules.

Education Program Assistant

Conduct environmental education programs at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Lead groups of visitors in hands-on discovery of the various habitats at Felix Neck. During the summer season education program volunteers lead Seashore Discovery programs for groups of visitors ranging in size from five to fifty-five people. Training is provided.

Qualifications: Enthusiasm and interest in natural history and environmental education. Creative and flexible. High school diploma and some teaching experience. Basic natural history science background and local natural history needed. Responsible and prompt. Minimum of 18 years of age. Able to commit to volunteering at least one day a week during the summer season.

Property/Ecological Management

If you enjoy working outdoors, you can help Felix Neck by participating in a wide variety of property and maintenance projects, such as invasive species removal, trail maintenance, buildings and grounds work, light carpentry, and painting. Help care for the sanctuary and enjoy a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment. Carpentry skills welcome. Nature lovers appreciated.

Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Some tasks may require heavy lifting. Ability to work without supervision required.

Gardening

Share your skills or learn new ones in our beautiful butterfly garden. Work on your own or have fun with others on scheduled volunteer days. Ability to work without supervision required.

Group Projects

Do you have a group that needs a community service project? If you do, then Felix Neck is the place for you on Martha’s Vineyard. We are looking for groups of between 10 and 25 people to work on various projects on the Sanctuary that center around trail work and ecological management. Please call to schedule your group.

Special Events

Our Fall Festival, the day after Thanksgiving, attracts hundreds of people. Join us in the festivities by taking admissions, assisting in the craft tent, or serving food.

Special Projects

If you have a special talent or interest that you would like to share with Felix Neck, we invite you to meet with us and let us know of your ideas and special skills. Previous projects have included mural painting, butterfly garden design, wood duck box construction, screen house construction, and curriculum development. Your creative energies are welcome.
